In 1997 Shen lost her beloved father to a seemingly untimely death.

This pain was unbearable to her.

Through the pain she could only bear one thing. One thing that he had loved with her- Jazz.

She painted what he loved.

She painted what he taught her to love.

What he loved became beauty.

"Jazz has brought me so much throughout my life, it was a valuable part of my upbringing in my house. Dad, Mom, and I would watch the jazz musicians perform in different venues throughout the span of my childhood. It was a common denominator that we all shared together- it just seemed natural for me to paint them as an adult- and it helped me remember dad and deal with his loss."
